I know very little about this emerging technology concerning a more "local" Internet. I've heard it referred to as "Web 3.0" and "the Fediverse." I have been aware of it for a while and haven't fully committed to making the jump, but a non-corporate online experience is very appealing to me.

As for everyone else I know, I don't think they're even aware that another option exists.

When I saw the call for this essay on notes, I saved it immediately because I want to read Careless People. Later, when I watched Sarah Wynn-Williams speaking to the Senate, I felt a really strange sensation during the "Chinese-communism-dictatorship" part of her speech. As a Brazilian, sometimes the way the US portrays China feels so propaganda-based to me that it sounds like a childish approach to the subject.

But the part that appealed to me the most was the "target-ad" moment, when she described the use of teenage activity on the platform—although she spoke about it only briefly.

Well, that was the reason I saved your essay in the first place. But after reading it, I could never have imagined how much it would broaden my perspective—not just on her book, but on another very important discussion that progressives should be having about mass culture. The alternatives you presented are completely new to me, especially the idea of a "local internet". I'm very interested in the debate around alternatives to technofeudalism, and your essay, in addition to being very well-written and well-researched, offered me many new ways of thinking.

“Zuck realized that it didn’t matter what politicians wanted from him. He had grown so powerful that the rules-based international order was now running afoul of him.” Truly chilling. Such an incredible review and great journalism. You’ve convinced me to read the book - hope it’s half as thought provoking and well written as this was!

AI drones? Not that I'd turn down the cash but that's the one area of tech that's potentially creepier than Facebook.
